My favorite
scene from the movie “Gladiator” is Maximus
is going to be executed. He was forced to become a gladiator; Maximus must battle
to the death with Commodus’ gladiator for the amusement of paying audiences.
Describe
of the scene
During the battle, Maximus (Russell
Crowe) defeats another of Commodus’ (Joaquin Phoenix) gladiators and tigers meant
to ambush him. But Maximus has give mercy on the loser's life.
Reason
I love the scene
The scene was started a
crucial battle between Maximus and the Commodus’ gladiator. Maximus only has
simple weapon (swords and shield); but Commodus’ gladiator is handing two aggressive
and great attacking weapons (axe and a sword). The interesting part in this movie is the Commodus’
gladiator is wearing a silver-made mask with a crying male facial structure and
a helmet in lion shaped, which we can’t see through how the Commodus’ gladiator
looked like, we even can’t see the face expression from him whether is he
afraid and fear or not during the battle, which he shouldn’t let the
competitors know it by face expression and also for the sake of the protection.
It’s a pre-arrange battle to let the Commodus’ gladiator to win every battle,
Maximus and the other prisoner are a scarification in every battle. With the
existence of tiger ambush the scarification not only created a tension during
the match and also indirectly slashed down the scarification attack abilities,
ease for Commodus’ gladiator to get victory in the battle. It’s a perception and conspiracy set during
that century actually projected by nowadays wrestling show in U.S bringing the
entertainment to the audience with pre-arrange and untrue design for the
battle.
In this movie, accidentally
Maximus won this battle due to his great abilities of defending and attacking,
technically defeated the Commodus’ gladiator by throwing the shield to his face
and stabbing in the foot with the axe after slaughtered a tiger. The audiences were screaming to kill the Commodus’
gladiator (might be it was the first time get defeated has bringing a
refreshment watching experience, which out of the planning.) Even though the Commodus command Maximus to
slay his gladiator, Maximus failed to do so but spared the defeated a life,
which is totally disobey the battle’s rules, defeated must be dead, otherwise
it was not counted.
Interesting comment about wrestling. So is wrestling basically a gladiatorial event? Think about Tennis too, but tennis is real, whereas wrestling is a fiction.
