In this painting, the character consist of 4 characters,
which are Virgin Mary, St Anne, young Jesus and St John, the Baptist. Virgin Mary was sitting at the left hand side
and carry young Jesus in her left hand while her mother, St Anne was sitting
beside her at the right. Jesus cousin, the young St John the Baptist was
bending his body over the stone approaching Jesus, leaned himself beside St
Anne.
In this painting, knees of two women were complexes and
heading into a different position. Virgin Mary’s feet pointing to the left and
St. Anne’s knee were heading to the right. Their feet act unbalanced due to the
structure of the stone they were sitting.
St Anne’s face was slightly dull and solemn compared to the Virgin Mary
which is brighter and more contrast in order emphasizing Virgin Mary who was
carrying young Jesus. Virgin Mary
slightly twisted her body due to the movement of young Jesus, which is in moving
while St Anne was smiling kindly towards Virgin Mary which intimate it’s a
great pleasure and felt blessed for being chosen as the mother of Jesus, a
future savior for remitting the sins of people.
The index finger pointed by St Anne indicated the birth of Jesus is a
blessing from heaven to save the world, which the arm is positioned near the
Jesus, and also a sign of “heaven”.
Virgin Mary staring at the gesture showed by Jesus, pointing his index
and middle finger, seemed agreeing and responding the Index finger pointed by
St Anne or addressing the tasks to his cousin St John the Baptist who standing
opposite of Jesus, to Baptist him in 30 years later. And the young St John the Baptist accepted
the task, slightly lean himself down to the stone as a sign of modest and
humble. St Anne and St John the Baptist
head were heading to the left which position at the right corner but in the
meanwhile Virgin Mary and Jesus were in the opposite has created an interesting
composition.
